If I Should Have a Daughter

*This acrostic poem was written for my mother on her birthday.

If I should have a daughter
Let her sing along to the lyrics
Of lessons you have taught me-
Vive to the
Essence, to the example of
Your love. If I should have a daughter, I
Owe her my entirety, like the shadow you denied for me.
Unapologetic for her heritage, let
My daughter find her truth. Let her walk between the lines
Of the poetry that you read me. Tell her to love her mother,
More than I expressed to you.

I Love You Mom.

My mother at four years old.
